I think that the answer to both these questions is the same: Gemma was afraid of her power. She was scared of her visions. Also, the powers made her feel like she was an outcast and she would never be normal.

Yes, thats right. A little later in the book, she was really curious about what her visions were about. I guess she got comfortable and she wanted to know about it, but yes, danielle is right, she knew that she would never be normal, like anyone else.
